On February 10, 2020, the Atmore Public Library dedicated a room to Joyce B. Bolden to honor her dedication and commitment to the APL for 30 years. In November of 1975, Joyce became the director of Atmore Public Library. During her 30 years of leadership, she helped consolidate the Cornelia Elmore Library with the W.R. Holley library to receive state aid from the Alabama Library Service in 1977. She began a citywide newspaper drive to raise funds to benefit the library in 1983, as well as helped build Atmore Public Library in 1984. Joyce also formed the Friends of Library organization to support the APL in 1989, and designed an Atmore Monopoly game that featured local businesses in Atmore.
Joyce’s husband, Raymond, spoke on her behalf and mentioned her dreams of one day building a new library. Joyce Bolden made sure the library had a solid foundation—she nurtured it, encouraged it, and wanted to make sure that it would still thrive even after she was gone.
